IFOY Test

Name  NIMMSTA, HS 50
Category  Startup of the Year
Date of Test  22.-26. März 2021

Testbericht

Startup of the Year

Summary

The HS 50 is the first backhand scanner with a touch display that enables hands-free scanning.

Description

NIMMSTA offers the world's first backhand scanner with touch display for freehand scanning, which generates an increase in efficiency of up to 40 percent for all work processes, especially in the logistics industry. With a weight of 45 grams, the HS 50 is the lightest and smallest backhand scanner and captures 1D, 2D, POSTAL and DOT barcodes up to four meters away at a high-performance level.
The interactive user interface on the Paperwhite touch display provides the user all relevant data for the scanning process and enables entries and confirmations. According to the principle 'login and leave it in your pocket' the touch display can be used as an additional display and input unit in the process and no further device is necessary.

The scanning process is activated with the thumb via the trigger button or directly via the touch display. The haptic, acoustic and optical feedback function reduces the error rate. Due to the flexible velcro fastening on the back of the hand, both hands remain free to grip the goods directly and the position of the scanner and the trigger button can be positioned individually and ergonomically optimal for each employee. The HS 50 components (scanner, trigger pad and cuff) can be assembled modularly. Consumables such as the cuff or the trigger pad can be replaced easily and cost-effectively, as no electronics are installed. For user-friendly handling, cuffs and trigger pads are available in different sizes (each for left and right-handed users).

Innovation

The HS 50 especially stands out with its integrated touch display. No comparable product on the market fulfills this characteristic. With the HS 50, the previous search for the scanning device, capture the barcode, look at the monitor and then put the scanner down again to be able to grip the goods is a thing of the past. Scanning, reading of information as well as entries via the touch display are done in the working movement. Due to these features time and money can be saved. A further main feature is that no electronic components are built into the cuff. This means that the scanner and trigger button can be placed ergonomically optimal for each user and the cuff can be easily washed or replaced, which is very important with regard to sustainability.

Marktet relevance

The target group is primarily the entire logistics industry. The German logistics market alone has a total volume of more than 279 billion euros and over 3.2 million employees (more than 300 million worldwide). The potential for NIMMSTA and the HS 50 is enormous. Regarding Industry 4.0. the HS 50 is ideal to ensure the necessary connectivity. The aim of NIMMSTA is to optimize not only one process step, but the entire value chain. The focus is on creating more efficiency for customers, delivering quality, and ensuring customer productivity and growth, while improving the situation of employees and the environment.

IFOY Test

Name  NIMMSTA, HS 50
Category  Startup of the Year
Date of Test  March 22 to March 26, 2021

Test Report

The HS 50 from NIMMSTA enables hands-free scanning and picking similar to existing back-of-hand scanners. However, the system stands out from the competition with an integrated, interactive touch display. With this display, NIMMSTA has a world premiere.

Scanning, reading information and input via the touch screen: All tasks are performed in one fluid motion. The touch display is also freely configurable via the NIMMSTA app. The user can decide which functions are needed and what is displayed.

The system consists of three components: a scanner, a trigger button and a cuff. A flexible Velcro strap attaches the scanner to the back of the glove so that the user always has both hands free. For user-friendly operation, the gloves are available in different sizes for both left- and right-handers. Blue is for right-handers, green for left-handers.

The position of the scanner and trigger button are individually and ergonomically optimally adjustable. The cuff and glove are replaceable and washable. For optimal hygiene, the testers recommend providing each user with at least two sets of gloves.

After the scanner has been connected to the truck terminal, for example, the display shows the tasks to be performed. The "brain" is located in the vehicle terminal, which makes the scanner itself extremely light. Weighing only 45 grams, the HS 50 is one of the lightest and smallest hand-held scanners on the market. The scanner captures 1D, 2D, postal and DOT codes at a distance of up to four metres.

The user can scan in two ways: with the thumb via the trigger button or directly via the touch screen. The haptic, acoustic and visual feedback function reduces the error rate. If the scan is correct, green lights and a tick are displayed. If the scan is not correct, several beeps sound, the lights flash red and a cross appears on the display.

The touch screen is clear even in strong light and offers the user, thanks to the interactive user interface, all relevant data. Among other things, the display shows the battery status. The HS 50 is charged inductively (wirelessly) via one or more charging stations. The advantage for the user: With a new, fully charged HS 50, work can be resumed in a few moments.

How long a battery charge can be used could not be reliably tested during the IFOY TEST DAYS. However, the manufacturer guarantees that a full battery will last at least 6,000 scans or 18 hours in Bluetooth mode. A full shift is therefore always guaranteed.

According to the supplier, the HS 50 enables an increase in efficiency of up to 40 per cent - with a return on investment of only 28 days. According to NIMMSTA, the error rate is reduced by 35 per cent.

IFOY Test Verdict

Palm back scanner in itself are not an innovation. It is the combination with a touch display that makes the HS 50 special. Since the intelligence remains in the underlying systems, the HS 50 is also extremely light and compact, which makes it comfortable to use. The washable and replaceable gloves and cuffs are also definitely a plus according to the testers.

Market relevance

The advantages of the hand-held back scanner over hand-held scanners or other identification devices mentioned under customer benefits lead to a high market relevance. This is also due to the fact that despite increasing automation of the picking process, many process and handling steps in logistics are still carried out manually.

Customer benefit

In particular, the reduction of non-productive time for gripping other identification devices leads to an increase in employee productivity, which is reflected in customer benefits. The increase in ergonomics for employees is achieved by the reduction of additional gripping procedures and the easy-to-move weight of the back-of-hand scanner.

Novelty

The back-of-hand scanner itself is already well established in the market with several implementations. Thus, the HS50 remains a solution among others, differing only in detail by the new input options.

Functionality / type of implementation

In the test, the functions of the new device were convincing. Apart from the somewhat angular design, which is due to the installation dimensions of the display, the way it is implemented is very successful. This is particularly evident in the very successful operating concept and the possibility of customising functions using the software provided.
