Testbericht

Automated Guided Vehicles

Summary

With iGo Easy STILL provides an entrance to the world of automation. The new combination of an iPad with the driverless high lift pedestrian stacker EGV-S brings the benefits of automating into areas where only manual transport of goods made sense in the past. In addition to this, customers can set the system up on their own and adapt it later in case the circumstances change.
The system is designed to handle standardised transport jobs, such as provision and retrieval to and from production. The key to the independent installation by the customer is the comprehensive user interface of the iGo Easy app. This app leads the user through all the steps that are necessary to automate a particular transport job. First of all the reflectors which the truck uses to determine its position are installed and their locations are registered. To do this, the truck is manually driven through the respective part of the premise. After this step, the different stations are also approached by the truck and on arrival each position is activated by a touch on the iPad. All planned driving routes are automatically recorded during this process. Once this is completed, the app generates and displays the optimum driving route for the truck. Curves and straight stretches can easily be adjusted later on. Additional restrictions such as one-way roads, speed limits and characteristics of the stations can also be configured using the self-explanatory interfaces of the app. After a successful test run the truck is ready for immediate action: Transport jobs are sent to the truck by wireless LAN touching the respective button on the mobile terminal, and the truck executes the transport automatically. The cockpit function which includes a live camera image from the truck informs the operator at all times about the state and the position of the truck. The current position of the truck in the warehouse is displayed on a virtual map and important data such as speed, battery condition or current transport jobs are presented by comprehensive graphics. New transport jobs can easily be generated with the iGo Easy app, just as existing jobs can be modified. Transport jobs that frequently repeat can be stored for speed access. The system can not only be controlled from within the warehouse but also from any point within the wireless network. This makes iGo Easy the first software solution worldwide that allows a fully configuration, control and monitoring by an iPad.

IFOY Test

Test Report

Still launched iGoEasy at the beginning of 2013. This concept provides the customer with a special kind of standard automation. The unique system was developed for the automation of relatively small transport volumes that were previously only possible to move profitably using a manually operated forklift truck.

The iGoEasy concept consists of a standard truck suitable for automated use (in the case of the IFOY Awards an EGV- S 20 high-lift pallet truck), reflectors, an on-board computer and an operating system in the form of an iPad or iPad mini.

The system is intuitive and easy to operate, and enables the user to automate basic transport orders fully independently for the first time.

It all starts with the teach-in process. After the reflectors have been installed and calibrated, the truck is manually guided along the desired route. A sensor built into the truck detects the reflectors and automatically transmits the coordinates to the on-board computer. The next task is to record the stopping points. Where should the truck fetch or store pallets? Where is the resting station? Where is the battery changing station? Up to eight stations can be logged. A height sensor stores - and subsequently monitors - the storage height of the pallets.

Based on this teach-in process, the iGoEasy iPad app visualises the optimum route which is then fine-tuned by the user (as not every driver chooses the optimum route).

Knowledge of truck itineraries is desirable for fine-tuning, particularly with regard to curves. The route can be divided into sections to facilitate this fine-tuning process. After the route has been checked and approved, the truck can navigate its way fully autonomously through the warehouse and execute the learned commands.

While the tasks are being performed, the customer can read all the relevant route and job-information on the iPad screen, which also shows a live image of task execution. Changes can be made relatively easily via the intuitive operating system on the iPad.

Precision navigation means that damage to fixtures or buildings is a thing of the past. The goods also arrive at their destination undamaged via a smooth and consistent transport process. To this end, the standard high-lift truck is fitted with 2 sensors, which monitor the surroundings through a full 360 degrees. Two sensors in the fork ends check whether the truck can actually drive into the waiting load.

In combination with the relatively low maintenance and repair costs, this concept reduces investment and operating costs. And because Still uses standard series trucks, all automated solutions are also suitable for so-called dual drive use. In other words, manual operation is always possible.

Summary

Still's iGoEasy enables the customer to profit from the advantages of automation in a special way, particularly handling relatively small transport volumes. The simple teach-in process and intuitive operating concept via iPad mean that any operator can make changes to the route easily and quickly.

IFOY Innovation Check

IFOY Innovation Check

The idea is to make an automation solution for AGVs so easy to use that the customer can install it himself and adapt it to changing working contexts.

To implement this idea, Still GmbH has brought a combination of iPad and driverless pedestrian high-lift truck onto the market that exactly meets these requirements.

The iGoEasy system from Still is designed to facilitate the execution of simple recurring driving jobs. The sequence of individual motion sections is fed into the system in a teach-in process. To ensure the reliable performance of transport tasks, certain framework conditions have to be met, and these conditions are standardised for iGoEasy. Ease of use is one of the key elements in unsupervised set-up and utilisation by an end user. This is assured by the intuitive nature of the set-up application, which handles communication with the truck-side control computer and runs on a standard tablet. Laser navigation and simple reflectors ensure the necessary localisation of the AGV during operation. These elements are easy to install and calibrated during the set-up procedure. For this purpose, the vehicle to be controlled by iGoEasy is first guided through the planned route by an operator. It is during this process that the application enters the subsequent loading and storage positions on the tablet via teach-in. The manually driven routes are automatically recorded during the teach-in process and can subsequently be fine-tuned by an experienced user, complete with additional parameters such as speed limits, direction-of-travel defaults and station properties. Once this procedure is complete, the AGV is ready to go. The individual transport jobs are activated via simple menus in the application on the tablet from any location in the company within WLAN range. A cockpit function with embedded camera image from the moving AGV ensures that the user always has the vehicle under control. Updated vehicle data such as the position on the learned route or other relevant data are displayed in graphics in the application, which the operator can also use to easily generate or modify transport jobs.

Assessment of innovation

The iGoEasy system from Still represents a highly innovative solution of a kind that has not been available on the market to date. Conventional AGVs always need to be set up by the manufacturer. The systematic simplicity of the operating concept and the excellent way in which it is tailored to the end user with an iPad make it possible to control and monitor the vehicle in such a way that it can be deployed without delay in day-to-day warehouse operations.
